Mario Arthur Favretto

I hold a degree in Biology from the Universidade do Oeste de Santa Catarina – Joaçaba campus (2010), with a specialization in Environmental Management from Universidade Católica Dom Bosco (2014), and a master’s degree in Ecology and Conservation from the Federal University of Paraná (2016). I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), where I am conducting research titled “Impacts of systemic connectivity on the resilience of Amazonian ecosystems in the face of global environmental changes.”

I have experience in research areas such as Plant-Animal Ecological Interactions, Ornithology, Entomology, Herpetology, Habitat Selection, and identification of Orchids and Bromeliads. I am also the author and co-author of books and articles in the broad fields of Zoology and Botany. For my undergraduate thesis, I studied plant-animal interactions, identifying bromeliads and the hummingbirds that visited their flowers, as well as the entomofauna present in these plants. During my specialization, I studied the birdlife in different phytophysiognomies under the influence of a hydroelectric project. For my master’s degree, I researched the occurrence restriction and seasonality of two bird species, as well as their habitat selection, through phytosociological studies in their occurrence and non-occurrence areas.

In 2018, I developed the concept of the Bornschein-Reinert ecological balance point through studies of subtropical saline marshes, along with its respective ecological balance index. I was also co-discoverer and co-describer of two new species of parasitic mites of insects. I have extensive experience in conducting fauna surveys and inventories, an activity I’ve been engaged in since my early research years, having assisted in environmental licensing for subdivisions, hydroelectric plants, and wind farms.

Between 2012 and 2019, I worked in the Sanitary Surveillance sector (serving as head of the department from 2017 to 2019) at the Municipal Government of Campos Novos (SC), conducting educational and inspection activities related to the provision of services or commercialization of products that could pose risks to public health. During this period, I was also involved in the development and regulation of Sanitary Surveillance laws in the municipality, in addition to participating in investigative committees and disciplinary administrative proceedings.

I am currently a Laboratory Technician / Biologist at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, on the Florianópolis campus. In 2021, I began publishing a book series on the birds of Brazil, with the first volume covering the orders Rheiformes to Psittaciformes, aiming to provide open access to as much information as possible about these animals. The second volume was published in 2023, focusing on the order Passeriformes.
